Ratanakiri, one of the most sparsely populated provinces, is also home to the highest number of indigenous people in the country. This paper assesses the impact of three main destabilizing factors on marital stability in Cambodia: the radical reformation of marriage under the Khmers Rouges KR ; the imbalanced gender ratio among marriageable adults resulting from gendered mortality during the KR regime; and, after decades of isolation from the West, a period of rapid social change. Although there is evidence of declining marital stability in the most recent period, marriages contracted under the KR appear as stable as adjacent marriage cohorts.
These findings suggest that the conditions under which spouses were initially paired matter less for marital stability than does their contemporaneous environment.

Cambodia has a long and rich history in silk production and weaving dating back more than a thousand years. Country profile: Cambodia. Timeline: Cambodia. Cambodia has imposed a partial ban on foreign men marrying local women – would-be bridegrooms will now have to be less than 50 years old. The government says it is trying to prevent exploitation – and promote true love and what it calls “honest marriages”. But there has been a mixed reaction to the ruling. At the entrance to the marquee there will be a photo of the bride and groom. Occasionally one or other of them will be non-Cambodian – a situation that has become a little problematic.
I think she’s done well out of it and I’ve done well out of it. And I don’t see why that should be banned. Dr Gollogly’s wife holds a passport from Thailand – so they would not have been affected by the new rules.
