RCA custom pressed a large number of local label records across the United States from the early ‘s on. Their pressing plant in Indianapolis, Indiana pressed ‘s of local label releases in the area throughout the ‘s, 60’s and 70’s. There is a code in the RCA matrix numbers that identifies when the record was mastered it was usually pressed and released immediately thereafter. When Emile Berliner first established the United States Gramophone Company in , the recording industry was already eight years old; it had been a tumultuous beginning for the business, marked by a race to register patents, industrial espionage, and personal rivalries. The next six years would bring more conflict, and in the end would lead to Berliner’s decision to give up control of his patents in the United States to his associate, Eldridge Johnson, and establish an independent company in Canada.
Shortly after inventing the phonograph in , Thomas Edison established the first business devoted to recorded sound, the Edison Speaking Phonograph Company. It had five stockholders including Gardiner G. Hubbard, Alexander Graham Bell’s father-in-law.

It is the second-oldest record label in American history, after sister label Columbia Records. In , the Radio Corporation of America RCA purchased the Victor Talking Machine Company , then the world’s largest manufacturer of phonographs including the famous ” Victrola ” and phonograph records in British English , “gramophone records”. The company then became RCA Victor. The format was abandoned by , and two-speed turntables were no longer offered, but some Program Transcriptions lingered in the Victor record catalog until the end of the s.
During the early part of the Depression, RCA Victor made a number of attempts to create a successful cheap label to compete with the “dime store labels” Perfect , Oriole , Banner , Melotone , etc. The first was the short-lived “Timely Tunes” label in sold at Montgomery Ward. It was originally an 8-inch record with a dark blue label, alongside an 8-inch Electradisk label sold at Woolworth ‘s. Neither were a success. In , RCA Victor reintroduced Bluebird and Electradisk as a standard inch label Bluebird’s label was redesigned, and it became known as the ‘buff’ label.
Another cheap label, Sunrise, was produced although nobody seems to know for whom it was produced, as Sunrise records are exceptionally rare today.

Here is the second installment of the Victrola and 78 Journal, edited by Tim Gracyk, in the Fall of I recently acquired a west coast recording on the rare Nordskog label, performed by the Burtnett and Miller Orchestra. The Brian Rust dance band or Jazz discographies fail to mention that the two collaborated in and hired west coast musicians in Los Angeles, California.

The average value of most 78 rpm records offered to us is $1 or less. There are very few 78s that actually have the recording date on the label. in a crude wooden cabinet with a sloppy copy of the Victor trademark pasted on the front.
